According to the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, what we do in the next several years will count most in the fight against climate change. Agriculture is responsible for much of the world’s deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions, causing devastating impacts on biodiversity. Approximately 2 billion rural farmers in the global south need more support to turn these trends around quickly. They produce fully one-third of the world’s food, and many of them are women facing gender equity issues that result in lack of access to resources like fertile land, credit, markets, and services.

We created the Regeneration Hub model to scale up planetary regeneration at the pace needed to cool the planet.  Our Hubs provide local communities on the front lines of the climate crisis with powerful incentives for behavior change needed to restore the Earth.  Our Hubs offer farmers better incomes and produce many essential goods rural families need.

The Hub model has three main elements:
1) a village-scale mini-food processing  center;
2) a cooperative enterprise and training organization that
requires farmers to participate in forest protection and land regeneration in exchange for the many benefits offered by the Hub; and
3) an ecosystem restoration nursery, training, and innovation center that accelerates the shift to farming based on more diversified, intensive, regenerative agroforestry systems that we optimized for nutrition and food security, gender equity, and climate adaptation outcomes.

RF supports the adoption of the Hub model by hundreds of thousands of farmers worldwide. Using a capacity-building approach, we strengthen local partner organizations who desire our assistance. In turn, RF helps partner organizations build a Hub that uplifts their communities and restores valuable ecosystem services for the benefit of future generations.

Since 2021, we have developed 12 Hub partnerships whose restoration potential now rests on US-based financial, administrative, and operational support to fully realize the Hub model.

A flooded township in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2022.  Our local partner APAA is helping women farmers plant 35,000 food trees and build a maize flour processing Hub.  This will free local girls from 5 hours a day spent pounding corn into flour to feed their families.

HOW WE WORK

We share a replicable and scalable model to accelerate the restoration of degraded lands. It was designed to halt tropical deforestation by providing for the needs of local people. We partner with local community leaders, providing an incubator to assist with the adoption of our Regeneration Hubs by non-profits, agricultural enterprises, and Indigenous communities who want to protect their forest lands around the world.
